Why Adoption Fees?

Our adoption fees provide a portion of the costs that accrue in caring for and housing the homeless animals who are walked through our doors every day. As an open door shelter, we never turn away any animal. Fees also help subsidize medical care and evaluation each animal. Other services provided are listed under the categories below.

Dog Adoption Fees

The Western PA Humane Society pays the initial yearly fee for a City of Pittsburgh dog license. (Adopters are responsible for renewal license fee. If adopter resides outside of the city of Pittsburgh, adopter is responsible to obtain and pay dog license fee.)

Puppies

starting at $325 - Age 6 months and under, includes:

  • Includes Puppy Preschool Obedience Classes
  • Spay / Neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations: Distemper/Parvovirus Combo, Bordetella
  • Rabies (prior to adoption if deemed by standard veterinarian protocol)
  • Avid Microchip (form of permanent identification)
  • Flea Treatment application

Adult Dogs

starting at $155 - Age 7 months to 7 years, includes:

  • Spay/Neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations: Distemper/Parvovirus Combo, Bordetella, Rabies
  • Heartworm Test
  • Deworming treatment and/or fecal exam, Flea Treatment application
  • AVID Microchip (form of permanent identification)
(Note: An additional $75 may be added to the adoption fee if Obedience Classes have been designated as mandatory by the Behavior Team.)
 

Senior Dogs

starting at $75 - Older than 7 years,
includes:

  • Spay/Neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations: Distemper/Parvovirus Combo, Bordetella, Rabies
  • Heartworm Test
  • Deworming treatment and/or fecal exam, Flea Treatment application
  • One year WPHS Membership
  • AVID Microchip (form of permanent identification)

Cat Adoption Fees

Cat adoption fees can range depending on the time of the year. Please check for our specials on Facebook and Twitter!
 

Kittens

Under 6 months of age: $150

Includes:

  • Spay or Neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations:* FVRCP
  • Rabies (prior to adoption if deemed by standard veterinarian protocol)
  • Feline Leukemia Test
  • Deworming and/or fecal exam, Flea Treatment application
  • AVID Microchip (form of permanent identification)
  • FREE Box Cat Carrier

Adult Cats

Age 6 months to 1 year: $95
Age 2 to 6 years: $65


Includes:

  • Spay or Neuter surgery
  • Vaccinations: FVRCP and Rabies.*
  • Feline Leukemia Test
  • Deworming and/or fecal exam, Flea Treatment application
  • AVID Microchip (form of permanent identification)
  • FREE Box Cat Carrier

Senior Cats

Over 6 years: $35

Includes:

  • Box Cat Carrier
  • Spay/Neuter surgery
  • Basic Wellness Care and Vaccinations*:
    Feline Distemper, Feline Leukemia, flea treatment, deworming treatment and Rabies
  • Avid Microchip (form of permanent identification)

 

 

 

 

 

 

*Please note that vaccines may need to be boostered after adoption.  The cost of boosters is the owner's responsibility.

 

Other Animal Adoption Fees

Rabbits

$50 for either a single rabbit or a bonded pair.

  • Adoption Booklet which includes education materials and resources provided by the Pittsburgh House Rabbit Club

Ferrets

$75

Birds

Adoption fee varies based on breed.          

 

Small Animals

Please bring a small pet carrier to transport your new pet home safely

Guinea Pigs - $10

Rats - $10

Mice, Gerbils, and Hamsters - $5

Chinchilla - $100
